Tips on how to store your precious moments of photos, videos

EAST SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) – We all have old photos and videos stored somewhere in our homes; whether in the attic or in the garage. If so, you might want to take them out quickly and check their condition before they disappear.

Sometimes old photos and personal videos are the only memories we have left. But what many of us don’t realize is that how they’re stored could impact our precious moments.

“Preservation is really a way to slow down time, not make it disappear completely. Everything deteriorates over time,” says Ryan Perry, digital collections librarian, Central NY Library Resources Council.

So how can we prevent this from happening or at least slow it down? Let’s start with the photos.

“You want to keep your temperature as low as possible. Usually under 70 degrees and try to keep it as stable as possible. So you don’t want things stored in a place where the temperature goes up and down,” says Perry.

Make sure the humidity is low, usually below 50%, if possible. Another tip is to keep the photos away from light. This will keep them from fading over time.

“Overall, if you were to take your photos in a box out of direct sunlight without any adhesives or other materials, it would make a big difference,” says Perry.

So what about storing your VHS tapes or tapes? A lot of the same things apply, like keeping them in a cool, dark room.

Perry added, “You really want to think about digitizing them or putting them on a DVD or whatever so you can keep them.”

Just following these tips will help prevent your memories from fading.
