Stetson University’s digital arts program recognized as one of the best for game design

Stetson was ranked #41 in this 13th annual ranking of the best game design schools for 2022.

DELAND, Florida., March 24, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — As announced today, of more than 150 institutions offering game design courses and/or degrees across United States, Canada and countries abroad, including The Princeton Review Stetson in his Top 50.

Stetson was ranked #41 in this 13th annual ranking of the best game design schools for 2022.

The colleges on the 2022 list were based on a The Princeton Review survey of school administrators conducted last year, with the selection and ranking of schools based on criteria that broadly covered the quality of faculty, facilities and of technology. The Princeton Review also considered data collected from schools about their career counseling curriculum and services. The same type of ranking is carried out for doctoral schools.

A college admissions services company, The Princeton Review developed the survey in 2009 with the help of an advisory board made up of educators and industry professionals.

“Our Computational Arts program and Computer Science Department offer a range of courses that cover all areas related to video game and animation production,” said Dengke ChenMFA, Assistant Professor of Computation Arts, who helped direct at Stetson efforts in game design since fall 2018.

at Stetson The Digital Arts program began in 1996 as a partnership between the Computer Science, Studio Art, and Music departments. Today, courses include graphic design, web design, 3D computer animation, hand-drawn animation, video game development, artificial reality and virtual reality, digital photography, interactive art, digital video, audio recording and production, electronic music and sound design, and notation for multimedia.

In 2017, a revolutionary partnership was born, involving the University of Central Florida Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, or FIEA. The partnership was modeled after the highly successful Stetson Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE), using funding from donors and strategic alliances.

The partnership also involves EA Tiburon, one of the largest video game companies in the world. Every summer, two or three Stetson students have the opportunity to learn the latest game development processes for producers, artists, and programmers, and are expected to pursue a self-designed research project.

“The FIEA partnership has really been a win for both Stetson and UCF,” commented Nathan WolekPhD, Stetson digital arts and music technology teacher. “They have the chance to work with some of our best students and start recruiting them for their Masters program. Our students have the chance to work with graduate faculty over the summer and preview what it takes to be successful in the gaming industry.”

Notably, in 1999, Wolek was one of the first graduates of at Stetson Computation Arts program, and after completing his graduate degree, he joined the faculty in 2005 and has helped run the Computation Arts program ever since.
