golden eye is one of the most influential video games ever made, and gamers will be thrilled to hear that a remake is coming to Xbox Game Pass. Fans of the game have been waiting for a remake for over a decade, and now they will be able to play online with other players on the classic maps. However, while it was undoubtedly groundbreaking, there is reason to believe that it hasn’t aged well.
The 1997 release isn’t the only game that’s aged badly, as Redditors were quick to mention a ton of others, whether brand new or 30 years old. Between terrible graphics, clunky controls, and shocking storytelling, these games were products of their time.
GoldenEye 007 (1997)
Video games that are tied to blockbuster movies don’t have a great reputation because they’re usually made quickly and cheaply, as they’re just another way to market and profit from the movie. However, GoldenEye 007 was different from others, and the GameCube game completely reinvented the first-person shooter genre.
Unfortunately, this deleted user thinks the game doesn’t hold up as well as it should, noting, “I had a tournament in a movie theater a few months ago and GoldenEye was the main game. Incredibly boring to watch, terrible controls, gameplay was not what I remember. Disappointing. The game is to thank for first-person shooters that have made the jump from PC to consoles, but the 23-year-old game doesn’t have the best controls compared to newer releases in the genre.
The Sims (2000)
The Sims was so much fun and felt completely new when it first came out, as players could build houses for their characters and choose career paths for them too. However, it also involved doing chores, going to work, and socializing with other Sims, which was exhausting and even harder than real life.
Madeupgrownup explains, “I remember a lot more freedom, ease of play and storytelling. Then I also remember I was a kid cheating and making up a lot of stories in my head while I was playing, a much like a child with dolls in an imaginary game. .” Without that imagination, the game isn’t much fun, and it usually ends with the playable character sobbing in a fetal position or vomiting into a flowerpot.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002)
Grand Theft Auto Vice City is generally considered one of the best GTA games for its period setting. The video game is set in the sun-drenched, Miami-influenced Vice City of the ’80s, and between flashy sports cars, palm-lined roads, and radio hits, it’s one of the coolest open worlds around. immersive. But while they admit the tone of the game is still excellent, Perfis looks back on the 2002 release differently.
The Redditor comments, “Replayed city of vice recently and I found that it was aging quite badly. The atmosphere is timeless and the nostalgia always makes it a great experience. But in terms of gameplay, it has aged badly in my opinion. In all fairness, although the franchise had perfect driving mechanics, the vehicles didn’t handle very well, and the shooting mechanics of the GTA series were never good.
Resident Evil 4 (2005)
Nascentia thinks beloved survival horror, Resident Evil 4, does not hold because of his commands. The Redditor claims, “It really hasn’t aged as well as I expected. The controls are a bit clunky and tankish, especially after playing the RE2 remake, but some of the cards just don’t make sense and the dialogue is ridiculously bad.”
However, some might think the game has aged well for the same reasons Redditor thinks it has aged poorly. These “clunky” controls, such as players not being able to move while firing, added intensity to the already anxiety-inducing survival horror. The slow pace meant that players absorbed every little detail of the game. But it’s extremely slow and it’s not for everyone.
bully is one of the most overlooked Rockstar games ever made, because it’s so much more than the “GTA for the kids” it was designed to be. The game has a gripping story about a teenage boy sent off to boarding school, it has a uniquely creepy aesthetic, and it’s a great all-around package with some of the best mini-games.
However, Filmy_Ninaad once again refers to the mechanics as what keeps the game from holding up, simply stating “Incredible concept, clunky gameplay”. The 2006 version has a few gameplay issues that have long haunted Rockstar-developed games, such as repeatedly pressing X to run or cycle, which will become painful after a while. Rockstar games still have this mechanic even in their new games.
Myst is one of the greatest puzzle games ever made, and it’s basically like dropping players into Lost. The game allows players to explore an unexplored island that is full of strange scenery, and they have to put everything together by themselves. The 1993 version is a gaming success story, but this user thinks it’s aged terribly despite its ability to push the envelope.
The Redditor posits, “It’s very dated. Want to know how dated it is? It’s so dated, even its remake is dated.” A series of small-scale levels released episodically would have worked much better than a remake, because it’s clear that Myst is almost 30 years old as soon as gamers sit down to point and click.
Far Cry 3 (2012)
HalsySmiff thinks Far Cry 3 has aged badly, but not through his fault and that he is a victim of circumstances. The Redditor posits, “It was the game that gave birth to Ubisoft’s infamous cliche mechanics that have plagued almost every game since, but in the most simplistic and practical generic state.”
The Redditor refers to climbing towers to unlock more locations, objective markers, and the ability that allows players to see through walls, among many others. However, these were Ubisoft staples long before Far Cry 3as Assassin’s Creed did all of this first. And Far Cry 3 actually enough to make it unique, like the exotic location, first-person gameplay, and the iconic and terrifying villain, Vaas.
Silent Hill 2 (2001)
In the same way Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 2 is one of the most famous horror games of all time, but they are completely different. The game lets players explore a small town covered in mist, and every step forward is nauseating when players don’t know what lies ahead. But one deleted user notes, “Loved it Silent Hill 2but I feel like the controls and graphics just don’t compare to what’s out there today.”
The Redditor isn’t wrong, as the gameplay isn’t the game’s strong point, and it’s just walking through the foggy town that makes the game so terrifying and thrilling to play. However, there isn’t much to add to the game to make it better, as improved mechanics would take away the morbid psychological drama. And while the players are playing Silent Hill 2 for storytelling and scares, improved graphics might also benefit.
Max Payne (2001)
Hamze2011 thinks Max Payne doesn’t hold up, arguing, “The gunplay is horrible. Goons can shoot you with a shotgun from 100 yards while you’re at 100% health. Boss fights are unfair and there are a lot of bad chapter designs.” However, the difficulty level of a game does not necessarily mean that it has aged badly, whether it is too easy or too difficult.
And like Silent Hill 2, Max Payne is all about tone, and everything has been designed to elicit a real reaction from players. Max Payne is not just a game, but the psychological drama is an experience. And that’s why Max pay 3 is not held in as high regard as its predecessors, as it focused more on action gameplay than storytelling.
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
Every console has its own set of iconic platforms, be it Nintendo’s Super Mario or the PlayStation Crash Bandicoot. And for the SEGA Genesis it was sonic the hedgehog, which was about a super-fast blue hedgehog who got into a fight with a mad scientist who experimented on animals. It just has a ridiculous concept like every other platformer, but the gameplay was equally unique and revolutionary.
Unfortunately, B0xP0und thinks the game has aged poorly, not for its outrageous premise, but for its blandness. The Redditor argues that the game “was so fun when I was a kid now it’s like…running fast in a straight line…maybe jumping sometimes.” But between the creative and colorful level designs and the music, the game is a classic, save for a few extremely difficult and frustrating water levels.
